As a manufacturer of camouflage uniforms and tactical equipment, in our daily work, we are often asked a question by customers: Why custom uniform is more expensive than spot sale price?
Many times, when customers ask this question, they are confused and even a little angry, they feel cheated. The generation of distrust is just a seed hidden in the hearts of customers. It will continue to affect all future cooperation between us and our customers. As a manufacturer, I think it is necessary for me to explain this issue clearly through this article.
The difference between custom and off-the-shelf
As far as our own industry is concerned, if customers choose custom production, then they can customize the style, clothing color, Trims, packaging, Logo they need. And to buy in stock, you can only choose from our finished products. Selling off-the-shelf products can provide fast delivery and cheap prices, while customized services have longer production cycles and higher prices.
What makes customers feel confused or even angry is not just because of the high price of customized production, but why it is more expensive to customize 3,000 sets of uniforms of different colors than to buy 1,000 sets of spot for the same style. In fact, there is no problem with the customer's logic, they just don't know the actual operation difference between customization and off-the-shelf.
The so-called spot stock refers to a large quantity of inventory products produced by the manufacturer after market research that meets market demand. We don't only produce one style or color, multiple styles + multiple colors, their total amount is astonishing - hundreds of thousands of sets of clothes. Customers may only need hundreds or thousands of sets to buy off-the-shelf, but they enjoy the preferential price that can only be given when purchasing tens of thousands of sets.
For customized products, select from the initial fabric type and color, and provide color Lab Dip and fabric quality to customers for confirmation. Then make the fabric pattern and make the fabric sample. In post-production of the first version, communicate with the customer to adjust the version, and then make the final version. Bulk production will proceed after the final version is confirmed. In the first 7-10 days of production, because workers have to adapt to the new style, the production speed is slow, and the daily production capacity will stabilize after the adaptation period. From the customer's intention to customize to the final shipment, the process is long, and the time and labor costs invested by the factory will affect the final price of the customized order.
Factors Affecting Price:
New camouflage pattern
The new camouflage pattern needs to make corresponding printing and dyeing molds, and the cost of a set of molds is about thousands of dollars.
Quantity of order
The small number of orders will lead to additional small vat dyeing fees in the fabric dyeing process, and the average labor cost per day will increase
Production season
In the peak production season, the supply in the market is in short supply, and the cost of raw materials will rise
Fabric type and composition needed
For camouflage uniforms, the types of fabrics we often make are Twill and Ribstop, and the composition is 65%Polyester35%Cotton. The gray cloth factory will store a large amount of this kind of fabric, so the price has an advantage. If it is replaced with other fabrics, the gray cloth factory needs to specially arrange the production line for custom weaving, which will increase time and labor costs. Then it will naturally affect the unit price.
Customized Trims with logo
All Trims involving logo customization need to make molds or plate-making. From making samples to final confirmation, time and labor costs will be reflected in the unit price.
To sum up, I think "Why custom uniform is more expensive than spot sale price", you have got the answer.
